The movie trailer is one of the most important parts of advertising your movie. Every movie – no matter how big or small will need a trailer to help get audiences interested in the story you’re trying to share.

TIPS to creating a successful movie trailer:

Use clips from your movie. This is one of the best ways to make a successful movie trailer. You don’t want the movie trailer to be a shortened version of your film – why then would an audience go to see the movie if they already know what it’s about? The trick is to show just enough of the highpoints of the movie to draw in an audience without giving too much away about the movie’s ending.

Set a budget for your trailer. You might have all kinds of ideas for what you want to be in the trailer, but if you blow your whole budget on the trailer, what will be left on the film? Set a budget and stick to it.

Use voice-overs. Voice-overs are a good technique to help pique interest in different parts of a film without giving away too much with the actors dialogue. Don’t overuse voice-overs however. Developing a good balance between actual movie dialogue and your voice-over is essential.

Length. Keep your movie trailer between 1 and 3 minutes long.

There are many ways to distribute your movie, and even a low budget movie can become big – take for example Paranormal Activity – a small, low-budget movie that had a good idea, sparked some buzz, and got their movie out there. So, how do you do it? How to you market and distribute your movie?

Youtube – Youtube is a great source to get an immediate audience for a film you’ve created. Accounts are free, and viewers are on youtube 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, looking for things to watch. One catch: the length of the film is limited on youtube. Many youtubers have taken to dividing their movies into smaller parts to get the whole film up. By labeling your movie “Part 1 of xx” “Part 2 of xx”, you can easily get your whole film up.

Netflix – You can actually get a company like netflix to carry your film. To find out how to get your film into netflix, visit their website and click on the “Submit a film” link. Netflix highly encourages you to work with a distributor to get a film in with them.

Film Festivals – Another great way to market and distribute your film is by entering it in film festivals. Some require a small entrance fee, others are free. Look for one that fits your budget.

Movie ratings are an essential part of marketing a movie. They help the audience determine what is appropriate and not appropriate for them and if they can/should/want to see/recommend/learn about a specific movie. Movie ratings are especially important for parents by helping them determine if they should allow their kids to see a certain film.

Here’s a breakdown of standard movie ratings:

Rated G – The motion picture contains nothing that would offend parents for viewing by their children.

Rated PG – Parents are urged to use “Parental Guidance” as the motion picture may contain some material parents might not like for their younger children to view.

Rated PG-13 – Parents are urged to be cautious. Some material may be inappropriate for pre-teenagers.

Rated R – Contains some adult material. Parents are urged to learn more about the motion picture before taking their younger children with them. Generally it is not appropriate for parents to bring their young children with them to R-Rated motion pictures.

Rated NC-17 – Patently adult. Children are not admitted.
